"And I knew we'd get into that dirty stuff sooner or later..."

Huntersthompson_caricature

Gonzo lives!

Johnny Depp is slated to star in the screen adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's psuedo biographical novel, The Rum Diary to be released next year. This will be Depp's second incarnation of the good Doctor, after the 1997 portrayal of Raoul Duke in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

The Rum Diary (according to Wiki), is the story of journalist Paul Kemp who moves to Puerto Rico from New York to work for a small local newspaper. The story follows a "tangled love story of jealousy, treachery and violent alcoholic lust among the American expatriates who staff the newspaper." Sounds about par for Hunter's course...

The film will be directed and was written in part by British film maker Bruce Robinson, who was a friend of Hunter's and, I have faith, will do the book justice. The other charactrers for the film are reputed to be filled out by Josh Hartnett, Benicio Del Toro and Nick Nolte...looks pretty good to me!

And here's the six degrees of separation...Hunter, famed journalist and recreational personal chemist, writer of Fear and Loathing...--->Bruce Robinson, friend, director of Withnail and I(which is a fricken awesome movie, btw...thanks Emma!), the Rum Diary---->Ralph Steadman, close friend of both Robinson and Thompson, illustrated  covers for both Fear and Loathing..., and Withnail and I ----> GelaSkins, Ralph's illustrations are adorning iPods and laptops worldwide to the cheers and hurrahs of Gonzo fans everywhere.  I'm pretty sure that allows me a cameo in the new film, doesn't it?

Looking forward to it, to say the least...

Thriller from Manilla

As you know, we're huge fans of any Asian knock off of the Zomb-a-riffic MJ video, Thriller. Here's a cut from the most recent sighting  of MJ work in action...a Filipino prison!

BADGER! BADGER! BADGER!

The image “http://www.coffeeshoptimes.com/HoneyBadger.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.
BBC news is reporting that the British army has been blamed for a slew of ferocious, man eating Honey Badgers ravaging the Iraqi city of Basra. This comes on the heels of "Operation Shar-pei Puppy" which was a emphatic failure strategically, but elicited a series of deafening "Awwwwww' sounds that confused the enemy for up to 3-4 second in some places.
http://www.lasharpei.com/_borders/Fall_04_016.jpg

GelaSkins News is reporting that the badgers may or may not be 16' tall, are all left handed and have a penchant for John Waters movies and wearing Ukrainian placemats as a kerchiefs. That's enough to frighten anyone! *shudder*

Ye Olde Fashionede Advertisinge (an "e" at the end makes everyting older)

It's amazing how dumb people were back in the day. Actually, I don't know if people were that halfwitted or if it was advertising companies that just thought their marks were that stupid. Either way, they're extremely hilarious now...

ouch

"hmmm that MUST be good soap, it's killing my baby!"

Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before...

Mark Ronson

Mark Ronson, the man behind the nu-funk coming outta ol' Blighty these days has done it again. His new album 'Versons' is a series of his favorite tracks given the royal Ronson remix  treatment and boy howdy, does it smoke! This man is a remix god. Seriously, he could sit on a silver-lined cloud in judgment of all remix-kind and I'd be ok with that.

Anyway, 'Versions' has funkin' wicked covers from such deities as The Smiths (this single shot to #2 on the UK electronic charts) and features guest artists on every track, like the ridiculously awesome rumpshaker "Oh My God" (orignally by the Kaiser Cheifs) which has the My Space phenomenon Lily Allen killing it on vocals. This is my vote for the best track - it's so funky that it makes you screw your face up into a little ball like someone put a 3 week old bag of dirty diapers under your nose. Yes, THAT funky!

Here's a few slices...

Enjoy...

Built to Spill? Designed To RAWK!

Builttospillfinalweb

If you took the best experience of your life (say that time you found that giant bag of weed inside a full case of beer inside that free Mercedes your uncle gave you), and then multiply it by the hottest girl you remember from high school and melted them together into one emotional mass and then from that mass squoze out  5 humans and formed a band from Idaho, it would be kinda close to Built to Spill - awesome.

The real Idahoans in question will be rocking the stage at Lee's Palace here in Toronto (that's Canada for you geographically impaired folk) on Tuesday and Wednesday night for first time in their 15 history.
I will be sufficiently stoked to the gills as they (hopefully...fingers crossed) hammer through some of their greatest numbers, like Else, Car and Carry The Zero.

Their 2006 album (the first in several years) 'You In Reverse' is a sonic smash with their usual affinity for great production and I'm sure will be leaned on heavily for material during this trip, but I hope they won't forget their past as we Canucks haven't been treated to any of their previous guitar-based tirades to date.

Set Wish List:
Conventional Wisdom
Cortez The Killer (they do a (*ahem...)KILLER live version of this!)
Else
Strange
Liar
Goin' Against Your Mind

Things I Also wish for: Neil's Heckling...

Build it.

Or Spill it.

Giddy Up!

Download 07_else.mp3

UPDATE: Built to Spill approximately rocked the shit out of Lee's Palace. Great show top to bottom, finishing with a huge Randy Described Eternity (20+ minutes!).

Highlights: Meeting Brett (other bearded guitarist) outside smoking while the rest of the band was rocking through Conventional Wisdom - he got locked out and was forced to make small talk with me.

Robots in 'deez guys?

http://media.movieweb.com/galleries/3311/2525/lo/transformers_conceptual_designs_36.jpg

I, like many of my fellow late seventies hatchlings, will be having transformations in their pants as Optimus Prime and his band of metallic peace keepers descend to earth today to protect our puny little asses from the evil Decepticons. This may be the most excited I've been for a movie since Labyrinth came out.

Shut up...I was like 9 and David Bowie was scary...ok, maybe just his package and his crazy ass feathered 80's rocker hair was but we're getting away from the real issue  here which is  that Transformers are wicked hard! Especially when you're like totally kicking G.I. Joe's AND Cobra's ass but then your friends come over to pick you up to go for beers and you're like "uhhh I was just picking up my little nephews toys...uh yeah".

Not cool.
