So I think it's time to give away some of the newest skins in our realm away to you a few of you lucky little devils. That's right the new BlackBerry skins are hot and fresh off the press and we wanna get them into your grubby little hands.
As usual you'll have to answer the skill testing questions andfind the Jade Monkey before the next full moon. But failing the discovery of the Jade Monkey, we'll still probably give you the skins as long as you promise to mock any of your friends rocking an inferior skins on their devices and then comforting them with a tender pat on the back while whispering our URL in their ear. Sounds like a pretty good deal, huh? That's because it is.
Ok, answer these questions by replying in the comments sections and no, your answers will not be posted to the blog making it easier for everyone else, as someone so brilliantly suggested we shouldn't do in a previous contest. Great suggestion. A pearl of wisdom right up there with taking your clothes off before you shower and not eating roadkill. Classic.
1. Which GelaSkins artist has created the anatomy chart for a gelatinous Ursus? 2. Which artist from GelaSkins hails from the prairie city of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan?
The first ten people to respond correctly will get their choice of BlackBerry Pearl or Curve skin, so don't dawdle, these ain't gonna last long!
There's a lot of randomness to report so I'll just start with the most random. I read today that PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) are canvassing Ben and Jerry's (maker of fine and fabulously flavoured ice cream since 1978) to use human breast milk to make their ice cream instead of cow milk.
Here's a few potential quarts rallying for what m-udders to them...
I mean I'm sure you'd see a lot of young boys turning to dairy farming as a profession, but who wants to chow down on an ice cold waffle cone of Yummy Mummy, Pralines n' Tit or the soon-to-be-popular Peanut Butter D- Cup Ice Cream? I prefer to drink straight from the carton...
The band that God had play his other son's Bar Mitzvah, also known as Radiohead, is having another remix contest based on the success of the Nude remix project. This time it's the beautifully melodious and falsetto dripping Reckoner from their latest effort, In Rainbows. There's a few remixes up there already, but nothing I'm blown away with just yet. Anyone have any favourites so far?
There's a Cartoon Forum that happens every year, showcasing the best of the best in animation in Europe. This year the exclusive and prestigious honour of creating the trailer for the show was bestowed on the highly acclaimed German animation school Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. It took 8 weeks and involved the entire student body - awesome! Such a cool little video...
Audrey Kawasaki has posted some great pictures from her most recent show and vacation in Rome. Man, I love her paintings...
There's going to be some big things happening here at GelaSkins over the next week, so keep your eyes peeled. I'll give you a hint... It rhymes with " We're going to be offering Giclee Stints"...
Remember that cool video I put up last week about that guy doing stop motion video with water well here's a great video of Sam throwing up a black and white piece in full daylight in London. Booyackasha! Take that ever watchful eye of Sauron AKA UK CCTV. Yeah you know me...
Here's a great interview with the awesomely wicked Stella Hultberg over at Sour Harvest...God, she paints some sweet ass stuff! I'm not sure if there was a pun intended in there or not, but let's go with sure, there was...
There's a great show happening in the "Garden State" starting October 3rd called Prime Surreal Estate (great name eh!) featuring a few GelaSkinners better known as Ron English and Jason Freeny. The installation will feature Ron's Abraham Obama and Jason's Pneumatic Atomica along with a long list of other artists showing their latest wares. There's going to be a toy signing by Ron English on Friday between 8 and 9, so make sure you hit it up if you're around.
Joe Ledbetter has a great new hoodie that he's done with the Gama-Go folks - looks pretty saaaweet, no?
I just heard about a great looking new documentary from Iranian-Canadian director Eileen Yaghoobian that debuted at the Montreal World Film Fest a few weeks ago called Died Young Stayed Pretty and is all about the underground world of poster art and their creators. There's an incredible amount of talent that is virtually unknown due to the fact that a lot of these artist only make limited edition posters that are snapped up as soon as they're released. They're given no mainstream notoriety, only the respect of those in the know.
From their website: "Died Young, Stayed Pretty gives us intimate look at some of the giants of this modern
subculture. Outside of their own circle, they’re virtually unknown. But
within their ranks they make up an army of bareknuckle brawlers,
publicly arguing the aesthetic merits of octopus imagery and hairy 70s
porn stars. They’ve created their own visual language for describing
the spotty underbelly of western civilization and they're not shy about
throwing it in the face of polite society. Along the way, they manage
to create posters that are strikingly obscene, unflinchingly
blasphemous and often quite beautiful. Yaghoobian shows these artists
for what they are: the vivisectionists of America’s morbidly obese
consumer culture."
This looks like it's going to be something pretty awesome and can't wait to see it!
Speaking of awesome, I was let in on a little piece of awesome yesterday in the form of minute and a half video. My good friend whose vocation requires him to elicit emotions from his audience in the medium of advertising and usually leans toward the comedic edge, forwarded me one of the commercials that he and his team recently completed and it really hit me. The reaction from this was more of shock initially since it was created by a man whose dripping sarcasm and sardonic wit usually leaves me in stitches (even when I'm the brunt of it) and yet this was a horse of a different colour.
Anyway, I digress - watch this.
Note: If you would like to share this with your friends, please do so through www.morethanmedication.ca as every time the video is forwarded to someone the company will donate $5 to The Children's Starlight Foundation which is a great cause.
The Modern Amusement show is kicking off this weekend in SF and by the looks of it is going to be dooooooooope! Gallery1988, the host, has put up a page of previews on their blog and, boy howdy, there's some sweet shit in there.
GelaSkins is proud to announce the arrival of BlackBerry Skins to our site!
I know, awesome right! We gots yo skins for the Pearl and Curve with the Bold coming soon, so go check 'em out and let us know what you think!
Also, we've got the amazing work of Dan May debuting on our site today as well... so goddamn cool I'm wearing mittens just typing this! Yeah!
What? Bullshit you say? Well, I don't have to answer to you...maybe my mittens have finger thingys in them that I can just pull back to type. Yeah, you didn't think of that did you?!
Apology accepted.
Now, moving on... We've had a number of you calling and writing in asking about when the GelaSkins for the new iPods that Steve and his minions loosed on the world from Castle Greyskull Cupertino this past week are going to be ready - the answer is...
a) Never
b) Battlecat
c) Next Week
d) Nutella
If you can't guess this correctly, should shouldn't own an iPod, a GelaSkin or in fact know how to operate the device you're reading this on, so maybe this is a moot point...
To cap it all off - it's my favorite person's birthday today so in honour of her, here's a video of the best 19 pack a day voice you ever heard singing a song about perpetual youth and the desire to never leave.
Ok, so I've got a bit of an infatuation with Octopii, so when I saw this video I couldn't help myself. This animated short, entitled 'Oktapodi' is the brain child of the Goeblins crew from France and has won a metric ass ton of awards over the last year for this little beauty. Check out the low-res YouTube version we have here, or click on this link and see it in glorious HD.
Now here's something that is kinda interesting - the ultimate in impermanent; street art made with water.
Check out Sam 3's Water Kiss...sorta weird, but I dig it.
Couple of cool things to mention for this fantastic Friday!
First off - Gallery 1988 has just announced a show that opens next Friday with a few GelaSkin folk involved (namely Brandi Milne and Jason Limón) called Modern Amusement. If you're going to be in the Bay Area, please check it out!
There's a great new gallery opening tonight in Toronto called Meta Gallery in the Distillery District at 107-37 Mill St. This will also feature the work of a GelaSkinner by the name of MARS-1 so please check it out tonight if you can, but if not it'll be running for a few weeks to come I'm sure of it.
And just for some real randomness for the end of day - here's some Christian Ska.
Our main man L. Yang is going to be rocking a show this weekend in Long Beach, CA and it features Lawrence and five other up and coming artists from the City By The Bay ( (San Francisco for those unfamiliar). Incidentally, but not coincidentally the show is called '415' and will feature some live painting by the featured artists. He's been nice enough to share some sneak peaks at the new works from the show so feast your peepers on these little beauties...
